Grafting Basics for Tree Crops. Hands-On Workshop
About this Event
Have you ever wanted to graft your own fruit trees but didn't know where to start? Join UF/IFAS Extension Desoto, Hardee, and Manatee Citrus Extension Agent for an in-person, hands-on introduction to grafting in tree crops, with a focus on citrus and other Florida-friendly fruit trees.
This workshop is designed for everyone, home gardeners, hobbyists, small growers, and anyone curious about propagation. No previous grafting experience or horticultural background is required.
What you will learn:
- Why we graft: rootstocks, scions, and how grafted trees work
- The most common grafting and budding techniques for tree crops
- How to select, handle, and prepare plant material
- Aftercare: how to help your grafts heal and thrive
- Common mistakes and how to avoid them
What to know before you register:
- Grafting tools are not included with registration. The instructor will use a demonstration set, and a supply list will be shared so you can purchase your own tools if you wish. If sponsorship is secured, a limited number of practice tools/materials will be available on-site.
- Participants are welcome to bring a small potted plant or budwood from home to practice on, subject to instructor guidance.
- Light refreshments will be provided.
- Dress comfortably; part of the program is hands-on.
Persons requiring special accommodations to participate in this program should contact Edwin Gutierrez-R at [email protected] at the UF/IFAS Extension Hardee or Desoto County office at least 10 business days prior to the event so that proper consideration may be given to the request. F
