West Bay Rotary of Camden is proud to present "Gordon Bok with The January Men & Then Some" on April 18th at the Camden Opera House. All proceeds from this community fundraising event provide funding for local and international charities as well as local scholarships. Gordon grew up around the water and spent his early years working on various vessels. Along the East Coast, he learned tunes, sea songs, ballads, and myths from watermen and the people whose lives revolved around the sea. Composing his own songs and stories, he eventually became world-renowned for music in the maritime tradition.
Over the span of 60 years, Gordon has released more than 50 albums, touring across North America, including Alaska and some Canadian provinces, the U.K., New Zealand, and a bit of Australia, solo and with his wife, singer and harpist Carol Rohl. His entire body of recorded music was recently acquired by The Smithsonian Institute's Folkways record label.
In January of 1996, Gordon gathered The January Men & Then Some as a male chorus to explore working songs of the sea with him. He explains: “You might notice that two of our men are women. We noticed that back in ‘98. (We were a little light in the tenor section.)” They sing songs of many countries, as well as music composed and arranged by group members and other contemporary composers.
Reserved tickets are $25 in advance/$30 on the day of the show. Doors open at 2:30.
