Join us for a special screening of Joanna Callaghan’s award-winning documentary An inspiring and imaginative exploration of breast cancer and recovery, and a powerful example of how the arts can open up conversations around health.
Callaghan is an artist filmmaker and a Professor of Filmmaking at the University of Sussex. Following a double mastectomy, she embarks on a radically creative journey of self-reclamation, reimagining her relationship to her body through humour, performance and participatory artworks. Blending self-shot footage, animation and archival material, the film brings humour and heart to the sensitive topic of breast cancer.
After the screening, Joanna Callaghan will be joined in conversation by Natalie Ellis, . Together, they will open up a wider discussion on filmmaking, creativity and illness, exploring how the arts can shape the ways we understand and experience health.
The evening continues with a networking reception in partnership with the . Representatives will host an informal information table on breast awareness, self-examination and screening, creating space for open, supportive conversations.
This event offers a unique opportunity to reflect not only on personal stories of illness, but also on the vital role the arts can play in public health messaging, helping to break taboos, increase awareness, and create new ways for people to engage with their own health and wellbeing.
