About this Event
Gongs Beyond Binaries is a special New Year’s offering from House of Gongs to the Oʻahu community—an intimate evening of sound, movement, and shared becoming.
Led by Maguindanaoan Master Artist Farid Guinomla (Datu Piang, Maguindanao, Philippines) and Barangay Dance Company Pangalay practitioner Jae Tioseco (San Francisco), this workshop centers kulintang music and Pangalay dance as living traditions that move beyond fixed binaries—of gender, form, and expectation. Both artists, queer and fierce in their own ways, have cultivated practices rooted in ancestral knowledge while honoring fluidity, self-expression, and personal truth.
Participants will be guided through immersive musical and movement experiences, interwoven with talk story, intimate sharings, and short performances. Rather than a conventional class, this gathering invites listening with the whole body, moving with intention, and witnessing how gongs and gesture can open pathways to healing, resistance, and joy.
Gongs Beyond Binaries is a space to gather in community—to feel vibration, explore embodiment, and welcome the new year through collective resonance, curiosity, and care.
Workshop weill be held at RM 118 at UH Manoa's Music Building. Limited spots only and registration is required.
