Golden Hour: Stories from the Golden Horseshoe Race
About this Event
In late September, riders left Toronto to ride roughly 1,650 through every kind of terrain across the Kawarthas, Algonquin Park, and the Ottawa Valley, then back home.
This is the Golden Horseshoe Race. Join us at Sweet Pete's to hear how it went, from the people who rode, planned, and photographed it.
What's happening
- Eat, drink, hang! Enjoy free food and drinks from local vendors.
- Bike (and sleep) checks. Riders' race setups will be on display with the bags, gear, and sleep systems they used. See what they packed, what they ate, and what they'd change.
- Photo expo. We're turning our store into a photo exhibition by race photographers Ethan Mitchell and Glen Quinn, with prints available to purchase courtesy of Memento Film Lab. They'll talk about chasing riders across hundreds of kilometres, planning shots, and what their own days looked like.
- Campfire chat (no actual fire). Pull up a chair for riders to share stories about prep, packing, fueling, terrain, low points, and the fun parts, with time for audience Q&A.
- How a route gets made. Race organizer Theo Kelsey-Verdecchia will share how he scouted and stitched the course together, planned food stops and long stretches without them, and what he learned from racing events like the Silk Road
This is for you if you're curious about your first overnight, love gravel or mountain biking, camp, want to find roads that aren't on the map, or shoot photos and want to know how to cover a multi-day event. You don't need to race, or even own a bikepacking setup, to belong here.
We especially want to welcome new riders, women, and non-binary riders.
Tickets are free but limited. Grab one, and if your plans change, please release it so someone else can come.
