The Global Underscore is a special event in the world of Contact Improvisation, inspired by the pioneering work of Nancy Stark Smith. Introduced in the early 1990s, the Underscore is a structure for exploring the form in a deep, continuous, and collective way.
The Underscore is not just a regular jam, but a journey - an unfolding landscape of movement, touch, attention, and presence. It offers a shared framework while leaving space for individual experience, allowing the group to move together through subtle states of awareness and connection.
🌱 This year, we are opening a new chapter.
For the first time in Copenhagen, we are experimentally expanding the Global Underscore towards a dialogue with integrated dance practices. In collaboration with Integrated Dance DK, we are exploring how the Underscore can become more accessible and responsive to dancers with diverse bodies, perceptions, and experiences.
This is an invitation into a shared research:
How does the Underscore shift when we widen who it is for?
What new qualities of attention, communication, and movement can emerge?
🌐 𝙋𝙍𝙀-𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝘾𝙊𝙇𝙇𝘼𝘽𝙊𝙍𝘼𝙏𝙄𝙊𝙉𝙎
In the weeks leading up to the Global Underscore, there will be serveral oppotunities to get to know and dive deeper into the practice.
- Thursdays Inclusive CI Jam as a preparation and shared inquiry offered by Integrated Dance DK
- Fridays Focus Jams and other exploration of the Underscore offered by Dance Share
- Sundays Underscore-inspired introdutions at the Sunday-jam offered by CI Copenhagen
These activities are part of a broader intention: to gently prepare the ground for a more inclusive and interconnected event of the Global Underscore.

Whether you're new to Contact Improvisation or an experienced practitioner, you are welcome. However, we recommend that this is not your very first CI experience, as no guidance will be given during the main Global Underscore.
If you have not participated in the Underscore before, please join the introduction from 14:45 to 15:45.
This year especially, we invite participants to come with curiosity, patience, and care - for themselves and for the diversity within the group.

(we begin and end the Underscore together, so be aware to participate for the whole event)
- bring an extra set of clean and comfortable, long sleeved clothes, knee pads if needed
- bring a journal and pen
- please bring your favorite snack to share (there will be some chocolate, dates and fruits)
