About this Event
The Global Health Volunteer Programme: Essential Pre-Deployment Training is organised by Cambridge Global Health Partnerships and NHS England's Global Health Volunteer Programme. It’s an intensive two-day course specifically designed for resident doctors in training who are planning to work or volunteer in low-resource settings outside the UK. The course includes seminars, case-based discussions, and a course dinner. It will:
- Inspire and equip you to work safely, effectively and ethically in resource-limited clinical settings,
- Provide practical preparation that will get you ready for placements in resource-limited settings, and
- Increase your understanding and confidence in clinical and practical skills.
You will hear from a diverse range of speakers with extensive experience working in low-resource settings who will cover topics including:
- How to prepare for working abroad – logistics and medical skills preparation
- Working in a different language and culture
- Resilience and looking after yourself working in a different health service
- Ethical issues more common in health systems outside the NHS
- Emergency management of common conditions in African healthcare settings
- Working without the same resources as the NHS – top tips on how to adjust your care appropriately
- Managing infectious diseases including Malaria, TB and HIV
- Dealing with an outbreak on your doorstep
- Snakes and snakebites
The two days are made up of classroom-based seminars and small group discussions, held at Victoria House, Capital Park, Fulbourn, Cambridge. You’ll have the opportunity to choose 2-3 small group sessions most appropriate to your expected work abroad, including options in Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthetics and Adult Medicine. This flexibility will allow participants to tailor their learning experience, making the course uniquely suited to diverse interests and work placements.
At the end of day 1,you’ll hear from Global Health Volunteer Programme alumni, followed by the course dinner in central Cambridge where you’ll have a chance to chat more to the expert presenters and alumni.
