Julius Caesar arrives victorious in Egypt, BCE, and is being wooed for the support of his army by brother and sister, Cleopatra and Ptolemy, rival co-rulers of Egypt. Cleopatra, in disguise as a maid, meets Caesar and pleads for his help in defeating Ptolemy. Murder, attempted suicide, and intrigue take place in contrast to Handel’s most sensuous love music.
