With a career that’s stretched over nearly two decades, Steve Gunn has earned praise as one of the most compelling voices in American experimental, guitar-oriented rock music. Born in Pennsylvania and residing in Brooklyn, he first gained attention as a member of Kurt Vile’s backing band, The Violators, before carving out his own path as a solo artist with his debut solo LP Way Out Weather.
His work continues to mark major milestones in contemporary guitar music and innovative songwriting, weaving through folk, jazz, indie and ambient terrain. His latest record Daylight Daylight was crafted in close collaboration with longtime partner James Elkington and draws on delicate fingerpicked melodies, evocative woodwinds and strings, and shimmering textures, the album has been described as both intimate and expansive “majestic enough to fill a theatre but contained and domestic,” with songs that feel gently breathed into being.
