Ghost in the Shell at VIFF - when the body stops being the border
About this Event
Public VIFF movie outing - optional brief chat after.
Short summary
Some sci-fi gets old because it was only guessing the future.
Ghost in the Shell gets stranger because the future kept moving toward it.
Bodies as technology.
Memory as evidence.
Identity as something editable.
A mind asking whether it is still a self when every border starts getting porous.
Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film is only 83 minutes, but it opens a door most longer movies just stand in front of and decorate.
This is not a private screening and not a formal discussion night. We’re going to the public VIFF screening together, then whoever still has energy can stay for a brief after-film chat.
I want the version of this outing where people actually watch carefully.
Not anime nostalgia only.
Not cyberpunk aesthetics as a personality.
Not “the remake discourse” for half the night.
A proper big-screen watch of a film that still feels like it is quietly staring at the present.
A few things already sitting in my head
- “What makes a person still a person when the body becomes replaceable?”
- “Is the ghost a soul, a self, a pattern, or a comforting word for something we don’t understand?”
- “Does the film feel more spiritual or more technological?”
- “What part of this stopped feeling futuristic and started feeling normal?”
- “Why does this movie feel so quiet and so disturbing at the same time?”
How the evening will go
We’ll meet in the VIFF Centre lobby at 8:20 PM.
The screening starts at 8:40 PM.
Afterward, whoever wants can stay for a short chat nearby / in the lobby area depending on the flow of the night.
This is a public VIFF screening, not a private Meetup event.
Please buy your own VIFF ticket.
RSVP here does not reserve your theatre seat.
