Genoa 2001: 4 Days of State Violence

Join us for a screening of the documentary (2011) by Carlo A. Bachschmidt on the 25th anniversary of the G8 events in Genoa.

Few events have left an unforgettable mark on Italian society and politics like what happened in Genoa during the 2001 G8 Summit (July 19th–22nd). Black bloc were purposefully allowed by the police to infiltrate the peaceful protesters; in this way, police forces had an excuse to attack the other demonstrators, who believed that a world not based solely on neoliberal politics was possible. This paranoid behavior led to tragedy. Police forces killed Carlo Giuliani on July 20th and, on the night of July 21st, burst into the , media center of the Genoa Social Forum, unleashing extremely violent actions against unarmed activists. Out of a total of 93 people arrested, 82 were injured (63 of them hospitalized). Many of them were then brought to the Bolzaneto police station, where they suffered further torture. Amnesty International declared what happened in those days "the most serious suspension of democratic rights in a Western country since the Second World War."

Marking the 25th anniversary of those terrible events, we invite you to a screening of the documentary Black Block (2011) by Carlo A. Bachschmidt. The documentary (76 mins) reconstructs the police raid on the Diaz school at the 2001 Genoa G8 Summit.

Doors open at 7:30 pm. Screening starts at 8 pm.
