Join us for a presentation on Gaylord Nelson, presented by Neil Prendergast, Ph.D., at 5 p.m. on March 5, in room 170 of the Trainer Natural Resources building. The program will explore how Nelson, who served as a U.S. senator from 1963 to 1981, brought conservation to the forefront of American politics and helped found Earth Day, serving as a bridge between the conservation and environmental eras. Attendees will learn how he navigated his career during the nation’s shifting environmental concerns of the 1960s and 1970s.
Prendergast has taught environmental history at UW-Stevens Point since 2011. His courses focus on environmental justice, environmental history, and modern U.S. history. His recent research examines central Wisconsin activism against a nuclear power plant in Rudolph during the 1970s and a high-level nuclear waste repository in the Wolf River watershed in the 1980s.
This event is part of the Voices of Conservation in Wisconsin’s History Spring Seminar Series, hosted by the Wisconsin Center for Wildlife. The series highlights influential figures and ideas that have shaped conservation in Wisconsin and beyond. All events are free and open to the public and live-streamed on CNR's YouTube Channel.
