Gary Smulyan and Adam Birnbaum

On Saturday, September 27, the Gary Smulyan duo featuring baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan, a multiple time winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll, will appear in Westchester Collaborative Theater (WCT)’s Music in the Box series. Smulyan has shared the stage and the recording studio with trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dizzy Gillespie, saxophonist Stan Getz, pianist Chick Corea, timbales king Tito Puente, and R&B/Blues and soul icons Ray Charles, B.B. King and Diana Ross. “Gary Smulyan’s lineage comes more from musicians like Cecil Payne, Leo Parker, Pepper Adams, Serge Chaloff and Nick Brignola – the few baritonists that dared to master the tricky, chromatic music known as bebop,” wrote All About Jazz’s Francis Lo Kee.

The other half of the duo, Adam Birnbaum, has emerged as top voice in jazz piano. He has become a presence on the New York city scene as a leader and sideman, performing in such venues as the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Birdland, the Jazz Standard and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. He has also performed on many national and world stages including the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Spoleto Festival, The Red Sea Jazz Festival, The Rockport Chamber Festival, NPR Jazz Christmas and the Capetown Jazz Festival.

The Gary Smulyan Duo will play two sets starting at 7:30 at WCT’s black box performance space, 23 Water St., Ossining, NY. Cash bar and refreshments available.
