Have you ever wondered how people entertained themselves before everything became electronically connected? Since the mid-1900s, games have become a major industry. Powered first by television, and then by computers and phones, self-entertainment generates huge revenues.
Prior to the electronic age, outdoor games filled hours of idle time with fun and educational challenges. They also provided physical activity, helped to burn excess energy and were important for developing strength and muscle coordination, especially in children.
Many of the outdoor games required a minimum of special equipment, and when participants didn’t have the specified gear, they often improvised...substituting whatever was available for the missing items. That helped development of problem-solving skills.
Many of the outdoor activities have been forgotten, since they couldn’t be converted to electronic versions. So, to recall a few of the once-common outdoor games, Derby Historical Museum is planning a special event for people of all ages. “Games...Old and New,” staged on the museum grounds on Saturday, June 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will showcase a few of the once-well-known games along with modern variants of the activity. None of the games require electronics or electricity.
The event is free, and will feature: horseshoes, along with currently popular corn hole; marbles, and also kerplunk; roll the hoop and the more-recent hula hoop; hopscotch and stepping-stones; and pickup sticks, which was originally played with straw or twigs and is now presented as colorful sticks of plastic. In case of rain, all will be moved inside the building, and the horseshoes will become a static display.
It’ll be a fun day to get the family involved and perhaps share a few memories of earlier times with them. You can also show them other non-electronic toys from the past in the museum’s toy exhibit. The museum will be open and free to view.
