Founded in 2003, the Frontier Saxophone Quartet is a chamber music ensemble comprised of soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. Its members are active performers in the Champlain Valley and Montreal.
Members are:
· Soprano saxophonist, Gary Scavone, Music Faculty member, McGill University, Montreal
· Alto saxophonist, Todd Pray, Music Teacher, Peru Central School, Peru, NY
· Tenor saxophonist, Linda Sullivan, Music Teacher, Plattsburgh City Schools, Plattsburgh, NY
· Baritone saxophonist, Daniel Gordon, Music Faculty member, SUNY Plattsburgh, Plattsburgh, NY
The name Frontier reflects the cross-border cooperation that allows their musical collaboration to take place and the group’s frequent performances of new works on the “musical frontier.”
The quartet has premiered works by Texas composer Dominic Dousa, New York composers William Pfaff and Daniel Gordon, Vermont composer Dennis Báthory-Kitsz, and Finnish composers Janne Ikonen and Liisa Lipas. The quartet also appears on North Country Public Radio’s Music Heard Up North CD.
The Frontier Quartet’s repertory also consists of original works that explore the sonorous and blending qualities of this group of instruments.
