From Scene to Song: Songs for Improvised Musicals with Sebastian Blue

Tuition: $138

A workshop on creating songs that actually belong inside a story. These are the songs that live in an improvised musical: songs with a point of view, emotional stakes, and enough shape to carry the scene instead of just decorating it.

We'll focus on the craft of building musical-theater songs in real time. How to find a character's want. How to recognize when a scene wants to become a song. How to shape a song so it lands. And how to get back out into the story without derailing the show. Along the way we'll explore solos, duets, group numbers, "I want" songs, quieter emotional beats, and songs that change something between the first note and the last.

You don't need formal music training or a background in musical theater. A willingness to commit to the story helps more than either.

We have community standards, a conflict process, and a COVID prevention policy in place. Agreement/acceptance of these policies is required to participate in BATS classes. Canceled Classes

If we need to cancel a class due to low enrollment, illness, or other surprises, you’ll receive a class credit good through the end of the calendar year. Credits can be applied to any BATS Improv class for which you've satisfied the prerequisites, or gifted to a friend or family member.
