About this Event
From Junior to Leader – Understanding Risk, Responsibility & PI Insurance
Ready to level up your career? Join us in person for a hands-on session that breaks down the essentials of managing risk, owning your responsibilities, and getting to grips with Professional Indemnity Insurance. This session is designed for junior lawyers who want to better understand how law firms really operate, how risk and responsibility develop throughout your career, and how leadership starts far earlier than many people realise. We are pleased to be joined by two highly experienced speakers:
- Dan Blundell, Senior Vice President at Paragon Insurance Brokers, who specialises in placing Professional Indemnity Insurance for law firms
- Claire Revell, Partner at Beale & Co, who defends law firms in claims (and who began her career as a junior lawyer herself)
What this session will coverThis is not a talk designed to frighten you with claims or compliance. Instead, it’s about empowering you to understand your role in helping a law firm run well, protecting both clients and colleagues, and developing habits that will support your long-term career.Key topics will include:The life of a file – why small issues matter
- How seemingly minor issues or delays can escalate into claims
- Why spotting problems is not failure, but professionalism
- Practical guidance on what to do if you think something may have gone wrong
How a law firm runs – and why you matter
- Insight into the different roles within a firm, including COLP, COFA, MLRO and those responsible for complaints and PI renewals
- How your day-to-day work contributes to a firm’s overall risk profile
- The commercial realities of claims, insurance renewals, client confidence and recruitment
Culture and leadership
- What good culture really looks like: openness, support, learning and accountability
- Why culture matters to insurers as well as to people
- The impact of silence, burnout and “cover-ups”
- Leadership as a behaviour, not a job title – and why it starts from day one
Understanding Professional Indemnity Insurance
- A simple explanation of what PI insurance is, what it does and who it protects
- Why mistakes are human, and insurance exists to protect, not punish
- Why raising issues early makes you trustworthy, not a liability
Lessons from the claims side
- Real-world examples showing how early reporting can reduce stress, cost and impact
- The human side of claims and how they can become learning opportunities
We’ll close by pulling everything together, focusing on your role, your future, and the impact you can make as the next generation of leaders within the profession, followed by a Q&A and signposting to useful resources, including LawCare. This session is ideal if you want to:
- Build confidence in handling risk responsibly
- Better understand how law firms operate behind the scenes
- Develop leadership habits early in your career
- Feel reassured about mistakes, support and speaking up
