About this Event
How does a book get born? Is it conceived immaculately or does it gestate across years of caffeine and doubt and sentences that behave badly? And what happens when it’s finally translated through cameras, actors, and lights?
Join us for an intimate conversation with novelist Holly Brickley to celebrate the paperback release of Deep Cuts— a debut that moves through obsession, collaboration, and the ache of wanting to be heard. With a film adaptation already in motion, we’ll trace the strange and beautiful passage from private language to public world.
Set in a Berkeley bar at the turn of the millennium and unfolding across Brooklyn and San Francisco, Deep Cuts follows Percy Marks, critic, listener, relentless interpreter, as she enters a creative partnership that is equal parts ignition and undoing. It is a story about taste, ego, devotion, and the cost of giving your attention away.
Holly will be in conversation with anthropologist Cari Borja. This evening is for anyone who has ever wondered how art begins and what it demands in return.
Holly Brickley studied English at UC Berkeley and received an MFA in fiction from Columbia University. Originally from Hope, British Columbia, she now lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and their two daughters. Her debut novel Deep Cuts has been translated into 15 languages and is being developed into a film by A24 Studios.
