Join Fort Monroe Authority and Contraband Historical Society at ASALH Conference as we introduce the Hollins-Wiggins Contraband Legacy Archive; a groundbreaking descendant-centered research platform unearthing and preserving thousands of names, primary source documents, records, images, maps, and genealogical materials related to the American Contrabands and their communities. Attendees will be introduced to the Archive’s searchable database, interactive tools, and collections, including AMA records, Freedmen’s Bureau files, USCT rosters, pension records, and descendant submissions. Presenters will share how the Archive was created, demonstrate how the Archive democratizes access to primary sources, empowers descendant researchers, and supports ongoing historical, genealogical, and preservation work. The session concludes with an invitation for descendants, scholars, archivists, and the public to contribute materials, ensuring that the Archive continues to grow as a living, collaborative repository of Contraband history.
