From Experience to Evidence: A Comprehensive Look at CAS

Course Description:

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) affects only 1-2 out of every 1,000 individuals, yet this rare motor speech disorder has long-term impacts on individuals and their families. Join us to learn about perspectives on evidence-based CAS treatment from Jordan Christian LeVan. Jordan was diagnosed with CAS at age 5 and is a nationally recognized public speaker and a professional advocate for children with CAS and other disabilities. In this workshop, Jordan will provide an overview of current perspectives on CAS, share his lived experience with CAS, and discuss current evidence-based treatment approaches for children with CAS.

Audience:

• Speech Language Pathologists (SLP)
• Other team members that support children with CAS
• Undergraduate or graduate level students in the field of SLP

Learning Objectives:

After participating in this course series, individuals will be able to:

1. Describe how childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) differs from other speech sound disorders (SSD).
2. Summarize ways in which the lived experiences of persons with CAS can be incorporated into evidence-based treatment for individuals with CAS.
3. Describe the features of current evidence-based treatments for CAS.
4. Describe and discuss ways to maximize treatment outcomes and the quality of therapy.

Speaker Biography:

Jordan Christian LeVan, B.A., is a nationally recognized public speaker, and professional advocate at Fighting For My Voice LLC for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and other disabilities, and author of the Jordan’s World & Jordan’s Journey book series. He is the founder and president of The Apraxia Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that supports individuals with CAS and other communication-related disorders.
