Stop learning bits of songs. Start playing whole ones.
If you know your open chords and you've got a few barre chords under your fingers, you've got everything you need to play hundreds of songs. What's often missing is the know-how to pick up a chord chart and turn it into music that sounds right.
In this relaxed, hands-on group session, we'll learn a complete song together from a lead sheet, the same kind of chart working musicians use every day. By the end, you'll have played it start to finish as a group, and you'll know how to tackle the next song on your own.
What you'll learn
- How to read a lead sheet: chord symbols, bar lines, repeats, endings and song structure
- Rhythm and strumming that actually fits the song, not just "down, down, down"
- Smooth chord changes, including moving in and out of barre chords
- How to count yourself in, keep time and stay together with other players
- A simple approach you can use to learn any song from a chart
Who it's for
Guitarists who are comfortable with open chords and can play some barre chords, even if they're still a bit wobbly. Acoustic or electric are both welcome. No music reading required.
What to bring
Your guitar, a pick if you use one, and a capo if you have one. Song charts are provided.

Led by Vince Hearn, founder of Guitar Academy, with over 20 years' experience teaching guitar from first lessons through to Uni level.
