Creating Georgian churches in northern England 1700-1830 by Richard PearsThe alterations to Durham Cathedral in the 1790s by the architect James Wyatt were designed to create a structure fitting to the religious services of the eighteenth-century Anglican Church. Across the northern counties, medieval parish churches were remodelled in a similar vein and new churches constructed in the style of Roman temples. Much of this work was replaced by the remedievalising of Anglican churches from the 1830s following the changes promoted by the Oxford Movement and architects including A.W.N. Pugin. In this illustrated talk, Richard Pears will examine this lost phase in the history of English churches.
