2023 Bodegas Vi Rei Prensal Blanc $20.94
Mallorca is part of the Balearic Islands, an archipelago off the eastern coast of Spain. It is the only one of the four islands with designated DOs, including Pla i Llevant. Pla i Llevant covers the southeastern portion of the island and is predominantly flat, as pla translates to “plain.”
Bodegas Vi Rei was founded in 2014 with the goal of revitalizing native grape varieties while producing high-quality wines using modern technology. This bottling is made from 100 percent Prensal Blanc, an indigenous variety of Mallorca, highlighting the island’s Mediterranean freshness and identity.
2023 Ca’n Verdura Supernova Blanc $34.94
Binissalem is Mallorca’s second DO and the first to be officially established, in 1991. It lies in the northwestern part of the island and is known for its commitment to indigenous varieties. Ca’n Verdura is one of the region’s most exciting producers, focusing almost exclusively on native grapes.
Supernova Blanc is the estate’s flagship white, made entirely from Moll, Binissalem’s signature variety. The fruit comes from the winery’s best plots of old bush vines planted on cal vermell soils, composed of iron-rich red clay, limestone, and small to medium galets. Twenty percent of the wine is fermented in 500-liter French oak barrels, with the remainder in stainless steel. After five months of lees aging, the wine is clarified with bentonite clay before bottling.
2024 Los Bermejos Listán Negro Maceración Carbónica $32.94
The Canary Islands are a chain of volcanic islands off the southwestern coast of Spain, geographically closer to Africa than to mainland Spain. Located just 100 kilometers west of Morocco and along the 28th parallel, the region is among the southernmost winegrowing areas in the Northern Hemisphere. Because the islands sit outside the traditional latitude range for viticulture, elevation is critical to successful grape growing.
Los Bermejos is located on Lanzarote, the easternmost Canary Island. The vineyards are unlike anywhere else in the world, resembling a lunar landscape blanketed in volcanic ash formed during six consecutive years of eruptions in the 1730s. Vines are planted in hoyos, deep pits dug into the ash to protect them from strong, humid winds. This wine is made from 100 percent Listán Negro, the most widely planted red grape in the Canary Islands, vinified using carbonic maceration.
2023 Ca’n Verdura Supernova Negre $39.94
Ca’n Verdura’s flagship red is made from 100 percent Mantonegro, Mallorca’s ancient indigenous red variety. The grapes are sourced from the estate’s finest goblet-trained vineyards planted in the 1950s.
The wine is aged for eight months in a combination of 500-liter French oak barrels and large French foudres ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 liters, preserving freshness while adding texture and depth.
2022 Fronton de Oro $24.94
Fronton de Oro is run by two brothers whose father founded the winery in the 1970s. The estate is located on Gran Canaria, an island divided by a volcanic mountain range. The southern side is too hot for viticulture, while the northern side benefits from higher elevations and cooler conditions.
Fronton de Oro’s vineyards are among the highest on the island, planted at over 3,000 feet above sea level. This wine is made from 100 percent Listán Negro, fully destemmed, fermented in stainless steel, and then aged in used American oak barrels.
2023 Mesquida Mora Síncronia Negre $26.94
Mesquida Mora is a biodynamic producer based in Mallorca’s Pla i Llevant region, an area largely planted to international varieties but increasingly home to revived indigenous grapes.
Síncronia Negre is a blend of Callet, Merlot, Gorgollassa, Syrah, Mantonegro, Monastrell, and Pinot Noir. Each variety is fermented separately before blending, then aged in a mix of French and American 225-liter barrels. The lighthouse on the label symbolizes both the port of departure and the port of return.
