Join us for an evening of live jazz with The Strangers 🎷🎹

The Strangers are a Calgary-based jazz combo bringing together swing, bebop, funk, and fusion. What started from a simple jazz jam and a shared desire to connect people through music has grown into a group shaped by five musicians with very different influences — from classic jazz and blues to rock, indie, city pop, and modern fusion.

🎻 Beau McCartney — Bass

Classically and jazz trained, Beau has performed across a wide range of styles, including jazz, funk, country, and metal. His playing is strongly influenced by jazz fusion, funk, and rock, with inspiration from bassists such asJaco PastoriusandJoe Dart.

🎸 Deklan — Guitar

A co-founding member of The Strangers and a jazz student at the University of Calgary, Deklan draws inspiration from rock, jazz, fusion, and Japanese city pop, bringing a distinctive mix of textures and influences to the group.

🎹 Alejandro Torres Cala — Keys

Alejandro’s sound is rooted in funk and jazz, inspired by the soulful touch ofRichard Teeand shaped by influences includingHorace Silver, Herbie Hancock, and Jaco Pastorius. After rediscovering his passion for music in Calgary, he co-founded The Strangers and became an active part of the city’s music scene.

🎷 Kyla Lorca — Saxophone

Influenced by blues, jazz, and funk, Kyla is the founder of The Strangers, a project co-founded with Alejandro and Deklan. The group grew from a simple jazz jam and a desire to bring people together through music. Her playing is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and a love of exploring new sounds.

🥁 Ben Jackson — Drums

Ben joined The Strangers in January 2025 after reigniting his love for music. Inspired by jazz, funk, indie, and modern drumming, he brings a fresh rhythmic energy to the group while continuing to explore new sounds and ways of connecting with audiences.

Expect an evening that moves between swinging grooves, bebop energy, funky rhythms, and fusion-inspired sounds— all performed live at GULBAR.
