About this Event

Freedom's Journey: A Juneteenth Conversation

The Center for Black Excellence and Culture proudly invites you to an extraordinary historical conversation with Ms. Opal Lee and Dr. Charles "Chuck" Taylor.

Ms. Lee is widely known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth" for her tireless advocacy and historic freedom walks that helped lead the movement to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, by President Joe Biden in 2024.

Ms. Lee will be joined by Dr. Charles "Chuck" Taylor, educator, historian, filmmaker, and author, who wrote the book used in the national campaign to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday. His latest book Juneteenth: The Promise of Freedom, is currently being considered for two national awards.

Together, they will reflect on the past, examine the present, and explore how communities can carry the story of freedom forward. They will delve into the true meaning of Juneteenth and share powerful stories of freedom, resilience, and hope.
