About this Event

Join us for a powerful afternoon of history, reflection, and conversation as we welcome Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for a special community gathering at the Center for Black Excellence and Culture.

Through her tireless advocacy and historic freedom walks, Ms. Lee helped lead the movement that resulted in Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
Her work has inspired generations to remember, honor, and continue the journey toward freedom and justice.

Ms. Lee will be joined by Dr. Charles “Chuck” Taylor, historian, educator, filmmaker, and author of Juneteenth: The Promise of Freedom.

Together, they will reflect on the past, examine the present, and discuss how communities can carry the story of freedom forward.

Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A and enjoy a reception following the conversation. Dr. Taylor will also be available to sign copies of his new book.
