The introduction of the first BSI safeguarding children standard, setting a new benchmark for all organisations beyond statutory frameworks.
About this Event

This landmark event is being delivered in partnership with Bramah Safeguarding CIC, Solent University and Southampton City Council, and brings together organisations across statutory, voluntary, community, faith, cultural and commercial sectors.

BSI PAS 5222 is the first national, multi‑agency safeguarding standard of its kind, designed to support organisations operating outside statutory regulation to align with, complement and strengthen existing safeguarding systems, while demonstrating robust, credible and defensible safeguarding practice.

PAS 5222 is intended to strengthen confidence across the safeguarding system by providing a common framework that supports effective partnership working, accountability and public trust.

The standard is specifically relevant to organisations including (but not limited to):

  • Charities and voluntary organisations
  • Community and membership‑based organisations
  • Religious and faith‑based organisations
  • Sports, arts and cultural organisations
  • Hospitality, leisure and tourism
  • Housing associations and supported living providers
  • Businesses and employers
  • Broadcasting and media
  • NGOs and international organisations

It will also be of interest to:

  • Local authorities and statutory safeguarding partners
  • Police, health and education professionals
  • Regulators, inspectorates and funders
  • National governing bodies, umbrella organisations and professional membership bodies
  • Boards, trustees and senior leaders with system‑wide safeguarding responsibilities

During the event, we will explore:

  • Why safeguarding is a board‑level and senior leadership responsibility for all organisations working with children
  • How PAS 5222 supports prevention, early identification and safer organisational cultures, not simply crisis response
  • The governance, reputational and legal risks faced by organisations and individual leaders
  • How a recognised national standard supports assurance, due diligence and defensible decision‑making, including vicarious liability
  • How PAS 5222 provides a shared safeguarding framework that supports multi‑agency working and system alignment
  • Why “doing enough” is no longer sufficient in today’s safeguarding, regulatory and public scrutiny environment

The event will include a panelled Q&A session and keynote speakers (to be confirmed) and a short documentary explaining why PAS 5222 matters, how it was developed across sectors, and how organisations and partners can use it as a practical framework for action, assurance and improvement.
