As part of our exhibition, artist Mengyi Zhang will lead a free Piaoqi (floating lacquer) fan workshop for families, where participants will have the chance to create their own vibrant, handcrafted lacquer fans.

Discover the traditional Chinese art of lacquer painting on fans, a practice that has been passed down for over two thousand years. Using an intriguing marbling technique, you'll explore this ancient craft and create a beautiful fan to take home and treasure.

Please note:

• Young children must be supervised by an adult.
• Wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy.
• Booking is essential and spaces are limited.

Mengyi Zhang is a contemporary artist from Chongqing, China, works primarily with lacquer as a core material language. Her practice explores the generative and processual qualities of traditional craft, examining how such materials can be reconfigured and expanded within contemporary art contexts. For Zhang, lacquer is not merely a medium—it is a mode of thinking. She recently graduated from Royal College of Art with an Arts & Humanities (MFA).

The is an art centre for modern and contemporary art with learning at its heart. Opened in April 2012, in Mottingham, the gallery is uniquely set within the grounds of Eltham College and is a valuable resource for the students and the local community. The gallery has gained momentum hosting some exciting exhibitions including works by Matisse, Louise Bourgeois, and Cornelia Parker, whilst supporting emerging local artists. In unison with the exhibitions, the gallery's outreach programme works with local community groups, teachers, and schools, creating lasting relationships with our locality.
