Join us for a FREE Saturday of Science! This event is FREE and DROP-IN with no booking required!
From mosquitoes to microbes, skulls to smart machines, join us and celebrate British Science Week.
We explore this year’s theme of adaptation by considering what this means in science, including: how glaciation changes the Earth’s landscape; how mosquitoes are adapting to evade insecticides; how machines learn and adapt; how animals have adapted for survival.
Lots of experiments, puzzles and games all hosted by REAL scientists, doctors, researchers and experts from the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
More details
A range of engaging activities with the University of Liverpool
The secret life of microbes! Using microscopes, agar plates, and design-a-microbe activities, visitors will learn about microbial diversity and how University scientists study tiny life-forms that share our planet.
Frozen in Time: Join the Glaciology team to explore glaciation processes and their impact on landscapes. Discover how scientists observe and study glaciers, focusing on the last glaciation of Liverpool, where ice reached the tops of the University's tallest buildings. Watch as slime simulates the flow of a liquid-like solid down varied terrains, illustrating the dynamic movement of glaciers.
Volcanic Wonders: Exploring Rock Types through Turner's Art
Examine various volcanic rock types and their distribution on a volcano's structure through the lens of Turner’s volcanic masterpiece.
From hoofbeats to heartbeats, furry friends and future vets! Explore some paw-sitive discoveries with the Veterinary Science Department
How do machines learn? Explore AI and adaptation! Try out Google Quick, Draw! to see how computers recognise doodles, uncover hidden rules in our alien classification challenge, and take on a learning AI. Watch as machines adapt through experience—just like us!
Colourful Chemistry
Join our Chemistry team to learn about acid-base indicators and their vibrant colour changes. Discover how these chemical compounds shift hues in response to acidic and alkaline environments, providing valuable insights into pH levels.
How bad are bananas? The University’s Sustainability Team will introduce how the University is tackling the climate and ecological issues. Play the 'how bad are bananas?' game to explore carbon emissions and create your own climate change poster.
Meet scientists and midwives from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to discover how they are working to improve global health:
Kangaroo Mother Care: Learn about this life-saving intervention for premature babies. See how skin-to-skin contact helps babies thrive.
Mosquitoes & Insecticide Resistance: Explore real-life mosquito specimens and learn about the growing issue of insecticide resistance and its impact on global health. Then create your own pipe-cleaner mosquito!
Antimicrobial Resistance: Discover how we can all help fight this growing problem! Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is when microbes, like bacteria, viruses, and fungi, no longer respond to medicines that treat infections making infections harder to treat.
