Join us @Mounarath Powell Dance on Thursday, January 22nd from 11-12:30pm for another amazing class as a part of our Free Masterclass Series. This series is part of our efforts to make dance more accessible and engage the community in the arts during these times of rising costs. This class is free and open to the public ages 15+.This class draws from modern, jazz, and ballet techniques to create a versatile and physically engaging movement experience. Emphasis will be placed on musicality, coordination, dynamic use of space, and expressive range while maintaining strong technical foundations.
About Xavier:
Xavier Hicks received his initial training at the California Ballet School and the School of Creative and Performing Arts. He joined the California Ballet Company in 1992, and later joined the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. With that company, he was the featured soloist in Donald McKayle’s reconstruction of Nocturne. He has worked with Alonzo King of Lines Contemporary Dance, the Alvin Ailey School in New York City, Katherine Dunham, Diane MacIntyre, Julie Belafonte, and Eartha Kitt. He has appeared locally with San Diego Ballet and City Ballet of San Diego.
Mr. Hicks rejoined the California Ballet Company as a soloist in 1998 and was promoted to principal rank in 2000. His repertoire includes Petrushka, Flower Festival Pas de Deux, The Nutcracker, La Bayadere Act IV, Romeo and Juliet, Coppelia, Clowns, Bolero, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sleeping Beauty, William Tell Pas de Deux, The Mist Leaves No Scar, and Symphonic Dances. He originated a lead role in Rolls, and the solo Journey was choreographed especially for him.
He is the recipient of several awards, most notably for his performances in reconstructed works by Helen Tamiris and Donald McKayle, a scholarship of academic excellence from the Black Male Community of San Diego, and the 2001 Dancer of the Year award presented by the California Ballet Company. In addition to performing, Xavier Hicks teaches ballet for California Ballet School and other local studios, and is the director for the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker.
