The reigning North American Brass Band Champions, Five Lakes Silver Band, unveil their own choice program to be performed as part of their appearance at the World Music Contest (WMC) in Kerkrade, Netherlands, this July. The contest program will be previewed locally during a special "Bon Voyage” send-off concert on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at the First Baptist Church of Troy.
The first portion of the concert will a preview of the contest program. The Band will perform Mirage by Jan Van Der Roost, the required set test piece. And then a 35 minute Own Choice Program. A highlight of the band’s own choice program will be a collaboration with three-time Grammy-nominated trombonist Marshall Gilkes. FLSB will accompany Gilkes in a virtuosic performance of his own composition, Sin Filtro. Originally written for big band and later adapted for brass band, Sin Filtro showcases Gilkes’ unparalleled range and technical fluidity, seamlessly blending complex jazz harmonies with the powerful sonic landscape of a championship brass ensemble.
The second half of this send-off performance will include fan-favorites and concert staples as well as selections from both of the FLSB’s recent albums. The concert will also feature an exciting big band interpretation of Stars and Stripes Forever, paying tribute to our nation’s 250th anniversary, and FLSB carrying the pride of the United States with them to the world stage. The evening will be capped off by a special Motown selection featuring Marshal Gilkes.
Held only once every four years in Kerkrade, Netherlands, the World Music Contest is universally regarded as the premier global festival for wind and brass music, often described as the "Olympics" of the brass band world. Over its multi-week run, the prestigious competition attracts more than 20,000 musicians and hundreds of elite ensembles from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Competing in the Brass Band Concert Division places the Five Lakes Silver Band among 12 of the world’s most elite brass bands competing on the grandest international stage. They will face rigorous scrutiny from a world-class adjudication panel while proudly representing North American brass banding to a global audience.
While the concert is free to attend, donations collected at this performance will directly fund the ensemble's international travel and equipment logistical costs. This landmark event is expected to draw brass enthusiasts, collegiate studios, and music educators from across the Midwest for a final send-off for North America’s representatives as they compete for the world title.
