Free Community Movie Monday - Hairspray (1988)
No, not the one with John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky, and Zac Efron from 2007. No, not the stage musical from 2002. Let's go back to 1988 with the ORIGINAL written and directed by John Waters!
Hairspray is a campy teen comedy set in 1962 Baltimore. It follows the spirited, "pleasantly plump" Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) as she lands a spot on a local TV dance show and bravely uses her sudden fame to fight for racial integration. Drag icon Divine plays a duo-role as both Tracy's mother, Edna Turnblad, and a prejudiced TV censor. This was Divine's second to last film before his passing, just three weeks after the film's nationwide release.
Known for his transgressive and underground cinema, director John Waters created this as his most broadly accessible film. Now considered a cult classic Waters weaponized retro 1960s pop culture to expose and satirize systemic racism, prejudice, and body-shaming.
Carey's Bar is the proud sponsor of this film. Maybe stop over and have an ice cold beverage before (or after) the movie to show your support. Mondays are coin flip night starting at 9 pm!
