Celebrate international Free Comic Book Day at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Central Library (we are holding our celebrations a little later than everyone else, on Saturday 13 June). To celebrate our Comic Book Day, we have a mega giveaway, thousands of free comics to suit all ages and tastes will be available, there will be something for everyone.
Just pop along to Ngā Paiaka | the Bleachers from 9.30am and pick up a free comic.
Due to demand, we have a limit of two comics per enthusiast please.
Meet the comic writers and artists:
Meet one of your favourite local comics / graphic artists, Sam Orchard, Sarah Laing and Jem Yoshioka as they draw and talk about their work in these fabulous informal half hour demonstrations.
10am - 11.30 am, at Ngā Paiaka | the Bleachers
Sarah Laing is a multi-award-winning Wellington-based writer and illustrator her works include her graphic memoir Mansfield and Me, her comic anthology Let Me Be Frank and recently Sylvia and the Birds.
Jem Yoshioka, an illustrator and comic artist living in Wellington, New Zealand. Jem deftly weaving words and pictures together, Jem’s comics tell evocative and emotional stories with themes of belonging, place, and heritage. Jem’s works include the webcomic Circuits and Veins which has attracted a large following on Webtoon.
Sam Orchard is the Assistant Curator for the Cartoon and Comics Archive at the Alexander Turnbull Library. He is a comic artist and illustrator, who has been involved in community and youth development campaigns and practices for over a decade.
Drawing competition:
9.30- 12.30 at Ngā Paiaka | the Bleachers
Head over to our drawing competition tables and create your own work of art! Draw us your favourite character from a book, movie TV show – or perhaps a character from your own imagination. There’s a panoply of awesome prizes up for grabs.
Prize categories are:
Age 8 and under,
Age 9-13,
Age 14+
Winners to be announced later in the week.
