Join us at Arts & Education at the Hoyt for a special Free Admission Day and experience the American Innovation Tour at no cost. This self-guided journey through the historic Period House reveals how groundbreaking innovations of the early 20th century transformed everyday life in America.

At first glance, the Alex Crawford Hoyt mansion feels rooted in tradition, with its Tudor Revival architecture and Old World charm. But look a little closer, and you’ll discover a home that was ahead of its time. Completed in 1917, it featured modern conveniences that were rare for the era—electricity, indoor plumbing, a telephone, central vacuuming, a refrigeration room, a freight elevator, and even commercial laundry equipment.

As you explore, you’ll uncover how these early advancements shaped daily routines, influenced cultural norms, and continued to impact American life through the 1950s. Along the way, encounter objects and stories tied to the rise of technologies like radio, television, and household appliances—innovations that helped define what it meant to be “modern” in America.

This tour is part of our ongoing celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary and will inspire a full year of programs, including gallery talks, workshops, and more free admission opportunities.
