About this Event
Now in its ninth year, Fox Haven Foragers invites you to connect with nature throughout the seasons.
Each month, we’ll explore at least two to three plants that are ripe and ready for harvest. From native plants like milkweed, cattail, and elderberry to fascinating finds like willow, witch hazel, and Paw Paw, you’ll gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in identifying and processing plants.
Try your hand at natural dyeing with fresh herbs, foraging for wild edible mushrooms, plucking ripe Paw Paw, and cooking with cattail, all alongside field experts who will guide you every step of the way.
This series is about more than just gathering—it’s about putting the ethics of foraging into practice. Together, we’ll learn how to interact with wild ecosystems respectfully, ensuring your actions are sustainable and regenerative. You’ll discover when and how to harvest responsibly, how to propagate wild species, and ways to give back to the land that nourishes us.
Classes run from 9 am to 12 pm on the second Saturday of each month, from February through November. The first two hours will be spent in the field, gathering plants and learning botany skills. The final hour focuses on processing and preparing the harvest into a tasty meal or take-home product.
If you're ready to deepen your connection with nature and become a more conscious steward of the land, join us. This series was meant for you!

A word from a past student:
Foragers 1 class has been a bridge for me between my garden and the wild places. I’m also slowly adding new trees I recognize around my neighborhood and on hikes. I’ve made friends with a local Black Walnut and am getting to know it throughout the seasons. I’ve appreciated how each of our amazing instructors has not only rich knowledge, but also a deep relationship with the world around us. Their big-picture perspective of our ecosystems and our place within the larger world has inspired me to grow in the ways I practice reciprocity. I’m already planning for future classes at Fox Haven while also exploring and growing on my own. ~Charis Hans-Storms
From 2022 onward, Fox Haven will donate $2 from each event ticket to the Kikeokan Foundation to pay LandBack tax, acknowledging our access to stolen Indigenous land. The Kikeokan Foundation is an Indigenous-led initiative working to restore ancestral land and sovereignty to the Piscataway and other Indigenous communities of the Chesapeake.
