We close the month with Martin McDonagh's directing debut, which starts out as an odd-couple comedy and ends up somewhere much darker. Two Irish hitmen (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) are stuck waiting out a job gone wrong in the impossibly pretty medieval city of Bruges, killing time while their volatile boss (Ralph Fiennes) decides what happens to them next.
McDonagh came to film from theatre, and it shows in the dialogue - vicious, filthy, and somehow tender in the same sentence, which became his signature from here on. The comedy curdles into something closer to a morality play by the end, guilt and consequence catching up with people who thought they'd left both behind.
