Save the Date! Join us on September 24th for our first parent speaker series of the new school year!
We live in a stressful time in which anxiety, depression, and mental health problems continue to rise among children, teens, and adults. While parents question how to help their children and teens deal with these problems, many often struggle with their own mental health issues. Given the challenges we all face, it’s important to consider ways to help us become increasingly resilient. As Dr. Brooks will highlight an essential foundation of resilience throughout our lives is the presence of positive relations and connections we have with others. For children, these relations begin within the family setting. In his presentation, Dr. Brooks will describe specific, realistic ways in which parents can nurture family closeness, respect, and resilience and lessen mental health struggles.
Dr. Robert Brooks is a clinical psychologist who has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and is the former Director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital. He has lectured nationally and internationally and written extensively about such themes as resilience across the lifespan, education, children and adults with special needs, psychotherapy, parenting, family relationships, and creating positive school and work environments. He is the author or co-author of 23 books. Dr. Brooks has received many awards for his work, most recently, The Mental Health Humanitarian Award from William James College for his contributions as a clinician, educator, and author, and the 2023 Trailblazer Award from Worldmaker International in recognition of his contributions “to the field of human resilience and his innovation in creating new pathways for many.” Dr. Brooks has also served as a consultant to Sesame Parents Magazine. The Parenting Years Speaker Series is brought to you by NRYS, River Valley Charter School Parent Alliance, and Newburyport PTO.
