An intensive immersion into the theory and practice of Forum Theatre for anyone who wants to make and facilitate Forum Theatre work .
About this Event

So you want to start making Forum Theatre? This course is for you!

During this intensive, practice-packed week, participants will receive a toolkit of games, exercises and activities which form the foundation of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed.

Aimed at theatre practitioners, community organisers, artists, activists, and anyone interested in using theatre as a force for change. Participants will learn how to start building a dynamic, interconnected group, develop material and learn about Forum Theatre in action. Leading to the construction of a number of short improvised Forum Theatre plays.

Videos of past productions will be accompanied by provision of extant texts and explanations of the mechanics of this theatrical debate. Pieces will be critiqued and tested, with Augusto Boal’s revolutionary and accessible rehearsal techniques. Culminating in a small-scale public sharing on the last day, where Forum Theatre will be seen and tested with a live audience.

Whether you’re already leading TO based workshops or are completely new to the work, this intensive will equip you with numerous devices to use in a multitude of situations and expose you to the work of a wide range of practitioners in this field. In this space we will share ideas, concerns and applications of this work and learn not only from the experts, but from each other.

Who: This workshop will be led by STOP co-founders Adrian Jackson MBE with Lil Woods. Adrian enjoyed a close relationship with Augusto Boal during his lifetime, translated five of Boal’s books into English and collaborated with him on many occasions. Lil is an artist and facilitator who uses TO when working with communities including young people, older adults, refugees, and LGTBQ+ groups.
