About this Event
If you’re at a crossroads and wondering which way to go, let this guided walk through Moanalua Gardens help you towards taking your next brave steps. We’ll follow the four cardinal directions and explore -- each of us on our own unique journey -- what lies within us and before us. This experience is the second collaboration between Forest Bathing Hawaiʻi and Lani Almanza of Alakaʻi Associates. It is inspired by her newest self-help book . Participants will receive a signed, complimentary copy of the book.
On the 2-hour forest bathing walk, you'll be guided on a gentle, mindful stroll across the lawns and in the less traversed areas of the Gardens. As we move through less than a mile, mostly under the shade of trees, your certified forest therapy guide will offer a series of sensory-opening “invitations” to help you find your own personal connection with the natural world. Lani will add her insights about the elements and seasons of change represented by each of the directions. A highly interactive and respectful experience, you'll have opportunities to sit quietly in contemplation, as well as share with the others in your small group.
The setting for our mindful guided forest bathing experience is the privately-owned Moanalua Gardens, just a few miles from downtown Honolulu. This beautiful 24-acre green space is part of property originally bequeathed by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop to Samuel Mills Damon (1884) and has been maintained by the heirs to his estate for the public's recreation and enjoyment. On the grounds are iconic monkeypod trees (including the Hitachi Tree, designated one of Hawaiʻi's "exceptional trees" and the corporate symbol of Hitachi), native and other tropical plants, as well as several historic buildings.
"Forest Bathing" (translated from "shinrin-yoku," an established public health practice in Japan) is a growing global wellness movement backed by 40 years of scientific research on the physical and psychological benefits of immersing yourself in nature. Tours are conducted in English by Hawaiʻi's first certified forest therapy guide. She has facilitated more than 500 walks.
