About this Event
Every six weeks or so we’ll read widely across genres—everything from memoir and oral history to fiction, poetry, and graphic novels—so long as the content is “queer.” Though we’ll prioritize work by local and Kānaka writers, we’ll also occasionally venture elsewhere, into the horny zeitgeist of books like Game Changers, the series that inspired the hit show Heated Rivalry.
About co-hosts/discussion moderators:
Mitchell Kuga is a writer and editor who runs Small Kine Gift with his gay husband.
T Kira Māhealani Madden (she/her) is a queer, diasporic Kanaka 'Ōiwi (Native Hawaiian) nationally bestselling author of the novel Whidbey, out now with Mariner.
About the book:
T Kira Māhealani Madden’s memoir is a raw and lyrical debut about coming of age and reckoning with desire as a queer, biracial teenager amidst the fierce contradictions of Boca Raton, Florida, a place where she found cult-like privilege, shocking racial disparities, rampant white-collar crime, and powerfully destructive standards of beauty hiding in plain sight. Spanning 1960s Hawai'i to the present-day struggle of a young woman mourning the loss of a father, the book was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the LAMBDA Literary Award in Lesbian Memoir.
The book can be purchased at a discount at da Shop and Small Kine Gift. If accessibility is an issue please email [email protected]
