Our heritage storytelling tour begins beside the old Hedua tank, whose waters have watched generations of students, families, lovers and dreamers pass by. Around it stand some of the city’s most storied educational institutions, including Bethune College and other venerable colleges that gave this part of north Kolkata its unmistakable intellectual character.
From the tank, the walk moves through lanes where the past still clings to old houses, balconies and shaded courtyards, before arriving at the ancestral home of Swami Vivekananda. Here, Narendranath Datta spent his early years, a boy growing up in the heart of a city that was itself searching for a new identity. Standing before his home, history suddenly feels intimate and human.
And then there is Nakur, the legendary sweet shop, where generations of Kolkatans have paused for sandesh and other delicate confections. Its enduring presence reminds us that heritage is not only found in grand buildings or famous names. It survives in everyday rituals, in a glassy pond at dusk, the sound of students, an old family home, and the sweetness shared across generations.
