Food as a commons or public good: the necessary ingredient for health equity, environmental resilience and national security?
About this Event

From farm to fork, the UK is beholden to a handful of corporate giants to feed the nation, be it agrochemical companies or supermarkets - keeping us trapped in as cycle where shareholder profits and executive bonuses take priority over healthy, sustainable and affordable food. Meanwhile, wars, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the worsening climate and ecological crises, historic droughts and El Nino have turned food into a pressing national security issue. In this panel, we will discuss how shifting away from the corporate food system to a system where food is understood to be, and treated, as a commons or public good, could help solve the manifold crises in our food system. Panellists will present examples of real, on the ground alternatives, and explore how Andy Burnham’s new government should grasp the nettle to truly deliver good food in every postcode.
