FOOD & FOOTAGE: Survival, Sound, and the Politics of Waiting

This Jungo Life (dir. David Fedele) documents the everyday realities of young Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees living in informal street encampments in Morocco. Having escaped violence in Libya and unable to return home due to ongoing conflict, they inhabit a space defined by precarity, police harassment, and prolonged waiting.

The film is constructed collaboratively and shot entirely on mobile phones by the refugees themselves. This methodological choice transforms the documentary from an observational account into a shared act of authorship. The “jungo” — a term used by migrants to describe makeshift street camps — becomes not only a site of hardship, but also of image production, testimony, and political visibility.

At ZKU, the screening will be followed by a discussion on collaborative filmmaking, ethics of representation, and migrant media practices. The program situates the film within broader questions of who controls narrative authority in contexts of displacement, and how self-documentation can function as both survival strategy and resistance.

This event is curated by ZK/U fellow Ahmad Mahmoud. Ahmad is a Sudanese filmmaker, producer, and curator whose work engages with conflict, collective memory, and cultural resistance. He has collaborated with grassroots initiatives and artists across Sudan, producing films and programs that foreground underrepresented voices during and after the 2018 revolution.

The film screening is free of charge; purchasing a meal is not required to attend the movie night.
