How folklore, tradition and the ritual year can help you build better worlds regardless of genre.The aim of this workshop is to help writers better understand how folklore can be used to scaffold and enrich their world building resulting in more convincing and sustainable societies.Ritual year folklore isn’t just about burning wicker men or going trick or treating. There are reasons why certain traditions and customs are built into our timelines, and observing these in your work not only can make your stories more accessible and believable to the reader, they can also help bring order to/spark anarchy in the worlds you are creating. Join author and folklorist Liza Frank as she shares her tips and tricks on how to use traditions and customs to strengthen your creative writing. Please bring with you a piece of work in progress, something to write with and something to write on.Liza Frank is an author and folklorist. She has a Masters in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths and a Masters in Folklore Studies from University of Hertfordshire. Her latest book Household Lore, Folklore Traditions and Remedies for Every Room in Your Home was published in 2025 (Watkins), and Everyday Folklore: An almanac for the ritual year was published in 2023 (Murdoch Books). She has written extensively about myth and folklore and spent a year living by the rules of folklore for The Everyday Lore Project.
