For September, we turn to a story of exile, memory, and cultural survival.
September's Book Pick: We Measure the Earth with Our Bodies by Tsering Yangzom Lama
Genre: Literary Fiction/Historical Fiction
From: Tibet
About the book:
Spanning decades and continents, We Measure the Earth with Our Bodies follows three generations of Tibetan women whose lives have been shaped by displacement after China's occupation of Tibet.
Moving between Tibet, Nepal, and Canada, the novel explores what happens when a people are forced from their homeland and must find ways to preserve their language, traditions, memories, and sense of self.
At once intimate and expansive, it is a story about family, loss, resilience, and the enduring power of culture.
Why we chose it:
Tibetan voices are rarely centred in mainstream literature, despite one of the most significant and enduring stories of displacement in the modern world.
At FMV, we are committed to creating space for stories that are often overlooked. Through the experiences of Tibetan women across generations, this novel explores questions that resonate far beyond Tibet: What does it mean to belong? How do we carry our histories with us? What responsibilities do we have to those who come after us?
Beautifully written and deeply moving, We Measure the Earth with Our Bodies reminds us that preserving culture is not only an act of remembrance - it can also be an act of resistance.
Haven't read the book? Come anyway!
Our books function as a conversation starter and our discussions are always open - whether you've finished the book, skimmed it, or simply want to learn. We'll explore the themes, history, and cultural context together.
