Tiny Desk style concert in a rooftop train carriage ft Melbourne's preeminent Philosorapper with his new band, the legendary Victor Scale & DJs TBA.The time has come! It’s been six months since my album launch and six months six since I’ve done a full-fledged Flash Poetry gig with the live band and the coloured lights and all the excitement & angst that comes with getting a new band together, organising your first official gig and, in this case, throwing a rooftop party with the legendary Victor Scale & the Trainscendence crew in the process!
To be honest, I’ve been putting off doing this gig for a while, the same way one so easily puts off many other daunting but clearly very important/meaningful things (e.g. starting a creative project, changing careers, asking your parents questions about their life you’ll regret not asking when they’re gone, getting singing lessons. It’s not because you don’t care, but because you really do, and that comes with a whole slew of vulnerability and uncomfortable emotions that we would generally rather not deal with unless we have to. But of all the Flash Poetry ventures, these gigs are really at the heart of it and what really makes me ask myself what it is I want to create and put out into the world.
And sometimes you’ve just got to set a date. Friday the 5th of June.
The venue is an intimate train carriage lounge on the rooftop of a 5-storey building in Collingwood, the crown jewel of Trainscendence, a new (largely unbelievable) creative hub that everyone should really see before they die.
My Idea
Sometimes I go to a gig and spend the evening watching the bands while simultaneously trying to say hi to everyone and talk to people and its a bit disjointed and hard to hear and then it’s over. So for this gig, I thought it would be nice to have just two intimate performances earlier in the evening, and then a bunch of time left afterwards to ‘vibe’ out. (Or to simply go home at a reasonable hour, another favourite of mine).
Playing alongside me will be the one-and-only Victor Scale, who has just released an incredible new album Gabriel’s Diary [https://open.spotify.com/album/1dPBa6v67kY73dHvr7xNVm?si=g4LGHzgtRLeRjPnT8Wffgg]. Victor and I have played together informally (Confest Open Stage, Black Spark’s closing party), but this is our first official together and we have something very special planned!
We have Trainscendence’s magical rooftop till late. Possible DJs and other surprises to be announced. Early bird tix available.
It’s been wonderful having time away from releasing music, toiling in ableton and organising gigs, and I feel like my craft of freestyling and storytelling is evolving rapidly into something that is very exciting and seems to be resonating more and more with people. I have six months worth of new rants and I am ridiculously pumped to play alongside a very talented lineup of new musos.
