About this Event

Flash Folk | One Rehearsal, One Performance

Flash Folk is a pop-up vocal collective singing old songs of land, labour and resistance from the British Isles and beyond.

One rehearsal. One performance. Whoever turns up is the choir.

Flash Folk is back at Staffordshire St, Peckham, on Friday 2 October.

THE SONGS: LISTEN NOW

Lyrics, recordings and a little history for every song are all in one place: open the Flash Folk lyrics and recordings.

This time we are singing The World Turned Upside Down, Molly Malone, Roll the Union On, Miner's Lifeguard and Willie's Lady.

HOW THE NIGHT WORKS

Before 2 October: listen to the songs and learn as much as you can. You do not need to know every word, but there is only one rehearsal, so we need everyone to have heard them before we get in the room.

On 2 October: meet at Staffordshire St at 6pm sharp. We sing everything through together, lyrics in hand (you keep them on stage too).

Then you get free entry to A Night of Folk, and later that evening we perform the songs we learnt.

That choir exists for one night. Afterwards it disappears again, until the next one.

THE PERFORMANCE

This Flash Folk performs as part of STST Festival of Community | A Night of Folk at Staffordshire St, 7pm to 10.30pm, during the final weekend of Libby Bove's The Way of the Roadwytch. A night of live folk music, art and culture in Peckham.

THIS IS NOT A CHOIR

No auditions. No permanent members. No compulsory solos.

You do not need to read music or have sung in a choir before.

The line-up changes every time, because whoever turns up is Flash Folk. That is part of the fun.

WHO IS IT FOR?

People who love folk music. People who are suspicious of folk music.

People who sing all the time. People who have not sung properly since school.

Musicians. Non-musicians. Friends. Strangers. People coming alone.

People who just fancy doing something slightly strange on a Friday night.

All voices welcome.

EVERY TICKET COUNTS TWICE

Flash Folk is run by Sounds Between CIC, a small community-led music organisation in Peckham. Right now every ticket is matched £1 for £1 through our Match Trading programme, so booking also helps us keep grassroots music going.
