First We Bombed New Mexico - film screening

At a moment when the nuclear arms race is accelerating, treaties have collapsed, and the threat of the use of nuclear weapons feels closer than it has in decades, First We Bombed New Mexico reminds us what is actually at stake. This award-winning documentary follows the New Mexico "Downwinders" — Latino and Native American communities who have lived with the consequences of the world's first nuclear weapons test since 1945 — and their extraordinary fight for recognition, reparation, and justice. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q and A connecting the story of the New Mexico Downwinders to the contemporary global movement for nuclear abolition. The panel features Lois Lipman, the film's director; Paul Pino, an affected community member and activist; and Susi Snyder, the Director of Programmes for the Nobel prize-winning International Campaign for the Abolishment of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

Days after the Trinity test, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians. The chain of nuclear harm set in motion in the New Mexico desert continues to this day. The Downwinders' struggle reminds us that the burden of nuclear harm is shared by communities around the world — and that change is possible.

Please arrive by 18:00. The screening will take place in room LAB2. The film begins promptly at 18:15, followed by the panel discussion and Q&A. A drinks and snacks reception will then follow for the first 30 guests. The film and discussion will be held in English.
