Heroïsch, op locatie in de Sahara geschoten epos van Jacques Feyder: een spectaculaire woestijnfantasie waarin twee Franse legionairs verdwalen en in het verdwenen rijk Atlantis belanden. Live begeleid door Marmoucha Orchestra.
Twee Franse legionairs verdwalen in de Sahara en belanden in het verdwenen rijk Atlantis, waar ze in de ban raken van de onweerstaanbare maar wrede koningin Antinea (Stacia Napierkowska). Grote delen van dit ruim twee uur durende, heroïsche epos werden opgenomen op locatie in de Sahara: Feyder bracht zijn hele cast en crew naar Algerije voor acht maanden filmen: naar Touggourt om precies te zijn, 800 kilometer ten zuiden van Algiers. Een gedurfde onderneming in die tijd; geen enkele filmmaker had zoiets ooit eerder gedaan maar het legde hem geen windeieren legde: L’Atlantide werd een wereldwijd succes.
De productie van deze film was een van de duurste in die tijd. De distributeur van de film Louis Aubert beloofde daarom een publiciteitscampagne in grootse stijl, maar eiste ook de aanwezigheid van een grote ster in de cast. Dat werd Stacia de Napierowsca in de rol van de mysterieuze Antinea. Haar interpretatie kreeg de nodige kritiek maar, zoals Feyders tijdgenoot regisseur Louis Delluc zou opmerken: “De échte ster van deze film is de woestijn.”
L’Atlantide was een van de eerste speelfilms die de Franse koloniale aanwezigheid in Noord-Afrika verbeeldden, en werd gevolgd door een reeks andere films gemaakt in de jaren twintig die voornamelijk de romantische en exotische aspecten van deze koloniale tijd benadrukten. Latere voorbeelden in deze koloniale traditie waren onder meer Le bled (1929) van Jean Renoir, Le grand jeu (1934) van Feyder zelf.
Marmoucha Orchestra
Het Marmoucha Orchestra begeleidt deze klassieke stomme film met live muziek in een intieme setting. Met een vernieuwende draai laat het Marmoucha kwintet de stille film opnieuw tot leven komen. Geniet van een avond vol passie, drama en schoonheid met een bijzondere muzikale interpretatie.
Het Marmoucha kwintet bestaat uit vijf getalenteerde muzikanten met uiteenlopende muzikale achtergronden en invloeden, en met een gezamenlijke passie voor muziek uit de Mediterrane en SWANA-regio (Zuidwest-Azië & Noord-Afrika, met name de regio van Iran tot Marokko). Hun muziek is een intrigerende combinatie van traditionele stukken en eigen composities, zorgvuldig gearrangeerd voor deze specifieke film. Maripepa Contreras, de projectleider en arrangeur, creëert de filmscore door eigen composities en arrangementen uit het brede Marmoucha-repertoire te herarrangeren. Ze integreert scenische ruimtes waar de muzikanten ruimte hebben voor improvisaties, wat zorgt voor een dynamische en emotionele soundtrack.

Heroic epic shot on location in the Sahara by Jacques Feyder: a spectacular desert fantasy in which two French legionnaires lose their way and end up in the lost realm of Atlantis. With live music by Marmoucha Orchestra.
Two French legionnaires lose their way in the Sahara and end up in the lost realm of Atlantis, where they fall under the spell of the irresistible yet cruel Queen Antinea (Stacia Napierkowska). Large parts of this more than two-hour-long heroic epic were shot on location in the Sahara: Feyder brought his entire cast and crew to Algeria for eight months of filming—specifically to Touggourt, 800 kilometers south of Algiers. A daring undertaking at the time; no filmmaker had ever attempted such a thing before, but it paid off: L’Atlantide became a worldwide success.
The production of this film was one of the most expensive of its time. The film’s distributor, Louis Aubert, therefore promised a publicity campaign on a grand scale, but also demanded the presence of a major star in the cast. That became Stacia Napierkowska in the role of the mysterious Antinea. Her performance received considerable criticism, but as Feyder’s contemporary, director Louis Delluc, remarked: “The real star of this film is the desert.”
L’Atlantide was one of the first feature films to depict the French colonial presence in North Africa, and was followed by a series of other films made in the 1920s that mainly emphasized the romantic and exotic aspects of this colonial era. Later examples in this colonial tradition included Le bled (1929) by Jean Renoir and Le grand jeu (1934) by Feyder himself.

The Marmoucha quintet consists of five talented musicians with diverse musical backgrounds and influences, united by a shared passion for music from the Mediterranean and SWANA region (Southwest Asia & North Africa, particularly the area from Iran to Morocco). Their music is an intriguing blend of traditional pieces and original compositions, carefully arranged for this specific film. Maripepa Contreras, the project leader and arranger, creates the film score by re-arranging original compositions and arrangements from the wide Marmoucha repertoire. She integrates scenic spaces that allow the musicians room for improvisation, resulting in a dynamic and emotional soundtrack.
