First Tuesday Lecture Series - “The People’s Will”: One of the World’s First Modern Terrorist Orgs.
From 1879-1881, members of the People’s Will sought to assassinate Russia’s emperor in an act of public terror that they hoped would awaken the apathetic Russian masses and incite a revolution. At the heart of this story, and the infamous assassination of the Tsar-Liberator, is the romance of two young revolutionary leaders: an aristocratic woman who descended from an empress and a son of serfs. Though from different worlds, they were united by their love and ideological convictions. While government authorities crushed the People’s Will within months of the assassination, their “propaganda by deed” strategy of assassinations and bombings went on to inspire leftist and nationalist terrorist groups in the 20th century.
The First Tuesday Lecture Series will be held in the Stenstrom Student Center Atrium on Main Campus, streamed online, and made available later as a recording on our YouTube Channel.
